Happily situated between France and Italy, Corsica Island is a real refuge from the outer world. Tourists worldwide are tempted by the hundreds of golden beaches, stunning natural views and endless sport and leisure options, and the island welcomes them all. And yet, in spite of its growing popularity as a destination for local and foreign tourists the area remains relatively pure and unchanged.
This peninsula is best known as the birthplace of the great Napoleon Bonaparte and tourist can see his home estate - Casa Buonaparte.
Hiking is one of the area's best attractions. This is truly nature's kingdom and the small Corsican towns and tiny villages seem to be one with the dark green mountains surrounding them. Even if you are not a great walker or accompanies by elderly and children, there are paths that fit any level of physical ability. However, if you are up for a challenge, Corsica's mountains offer some hiking routs fitted for the most relentless trekkers. Perhaps the best known one of these is GR 20 trail, which takes around 17 days.
If you are headed for the higher altitude treks though, remember that even in pleasant-climate Corsica, the mountain air can be quite chilly. Another climatic difficulty is found in the summer storms that are quite hazardous, especially for the GR 20 trekkers that face the danger of lightning.
Other popular outdoor activities include bicycling, rock climbing and visiting the local towns, and there many lovely trips you can do in the area and many viewpoints that will offer endless picture opportunities.
For ocean lovers, Corsica is a second paradise. With 1000 kilometers of clean coastline and fantastic weather to match, the beaches offer many activities as well as lazy-leisure options. During the summer water activities are plentiful and include snorkeling, scuba-diving, surfing and swimming. But the most popular sport for tourists on the island is sunbathing, and some visitors take it to a professional level.
Nighttime does not drive tourists away from the beach and you can always find plenty restaurants and bars offering the local beer and some tasty cocktails. With Italian and French influences Corsica's food was off to a good start anyway, but the area managed to develop its own style of dishes and many are quite unique and delicious. Chestnut, being one of Corsican's core ingredients, can be found in main dishes as well as snacks or deserts.
Corsica is easily accessible and makes a good short or long vacation - depending on what you're after. If you want further reading and other useful facts, try visiting Corsica-Isula.com.
